A free photo book is real, but it is rarely free all the way to your door. Most offers cover the book itself. Shipping, extra pages, a hardcover or a bigger size are on you. Some offers are also gone by the time you read about them.
We checked six well-known "free" photo book offers on October 19, 2026. Below you'll see what each one actually gives you, what it costs in practice, and when paying a bit is the smarter move.
What "free" really means for a photo book
Before you pick an offer, check these five things. They decide whether the book is free or just cheap.
- Shipping: This is the usual catch. A free book with $8 to $10 shipping is a cheap book, not a free one.
- Page count: Free offers often cover a minimum of about 20 pages. More pages cost extra.
- Format: Free usually means a small softcover. Hardcover and large sizes are upgrades.
- Expiry and eligibility: New customers only, members only, or a code that ended last month.
- Your time: A free book you spend four evenings laying out isn't free. Check how much work the editor asks for.
7 free photo book offers, checked
1. FreePrints Photobooks
Best for: one small free book every month, if you accept paying shipping
This is the closest thing to a truly free book. FreePrints Photobooks lists one free standard softcover per month, in 5x7 or 6x6 inches, starting at 20 pages. App store listings state a flat $7.99 shipping fee, whatever the number of books. Extra pages, hardcovers, larger sizes and more books all cost money.
We couldn't confirm the shipping fee on the company's own site, only through app store listings, so check it in the app before you order. If you want a small book and don't mind building it in a phone app, it's hard to beat.
Pros:
- The book itself is free, month after month
- Flat shipping, however many books you order
Cons:
- Small softcover only for the free book
- Upgrades add up quickly
2. Shutterfly
Best for: new customers and AAA members who catch a live code
Shutterfly has run a free 8x8 hardcover for new customers. The code we found for it was listed as valid through March 30, 2026, so it has ended. A deal-site listing shows another free 8x8 offer for new customers marked to expire December 31, 2026, with no code named. Treat it as unconfirmed.
AAA members could claim a free 20-page 8x11 hardcover by September 30, 2026, and use it by October 31, 2026. Shipping was not free unless you applied a separate code. Community reports put standard shipping around $8.99 for an 8x8 and $9.99 for an 8x11.
Pros:
- A hardcover, not just a softcover
- Frequent promotions
Cons:
- Offers change often and expire without notice
- Shipping is usually extra
3. Snapfish
Best for: free prints and a percentage code, not a free book
We found no confirmed free photo book offer from Snapfish in 2026. The only free-book code we found dated from 2018 and is long expired. New sign-ups can get free 4x6 prints and a percentage-off code for photo books, per coupon sites. The prints come with shipping charges.
That's still a decent deal if you plan to order anyway. Just don't expect a free book.
Pros:
- Welcome offer for new accounts
- Photo book discounts run often
Cons:
- No free book that we could confirm
- Aggregator sites carry stale codes
4. Chatbooks
Best for: a cheap trial of an automatic monthly book
The free first Monthbook promo we found is expired. What's live looks like intro pricing: coupon sites list a first book for $5, or three books for $9. Regular Monthbooks run about $15 for softcover and $24 for hardcover, per those same sources.
The catch is the subscription. Customers report that charges continue after the promo ends. If you try it, set a reminder to cancel.
Pros:
- Very low entry price
- Builds books automatically from your phone photos
Cons:
- Not free, and it renews
- Small books
5. Mixbook
Best for: design lovers who will use a percentage discount
We found no code for a free first book at Mixbook. Sign-up offers are percentage discounts, listed at up to 50% off in July 2026. A buy-one-get-one-free code expired August 20, 2026, and excluded 6x6 and softcover books.
Mixbook has one of the best manual editors around. It also takes the most time. If you love layout work, a discount is worth waiting for.
Pros:
- Strong design tools
- Regular sales
Cons:
- No free book that we could confirm
- Long layout sessions for big books
6. Walgreens Photo
Best for: store pickup and short-lived deep discounts
We found no current free photo book at Walgreens. A 70% off code for orders of two or more books ended August 15, 2026. Earlier free offers were prints, not books, and they have also ended.
Walgreens is worth a look if you want same-day pickup and don't mind checking for new codes. We couldn't verify CVS or Walmart offers at all.
Pros:
- Store pickup avoids shipping
- Deep discounts when codes run
Cons:
- No live free book that we could confirm
- Codes are short-lived
7. My Social Book (not free)
Best for: a complete book from your social posts with no layout work
To be clear, My Social Book isn't free. It's an affordable paid option, with frequent discounts of 40% or more. Shipping is extra, and a PDF version is optional. You connect Facebook, Instagram (professional account) or Dropbox, one source per book. The service builds a chronological book of 25 to 500 pages in 21 x 25 cm (about 8.3 x 9.8 inches), hardcover or softcover.
Dates, captions, likes and locations carry over. Comments don't. You can preview every page, add or remove content, delete a post and change the cover. You can't reorder sections or edit captions. You see the full preview in minutes.
It has 12 years in business, 700,000+ books printed, and Trustpilot TrustScore 4.7 / 5 (2,716 reviews, October 2026). If you need a big book of a whole year, a free 20-page softcover won't do it.
Pros:
- Automatic, no layout work
- Up to 500 pages
Cons:
- Not free
- Built for social media and Dropbox photos, not camera roll uploads

Frequently asked questions
Is there a truly free photo book?
Almost. FreePrints Photobooks lists one free small softcover each month, but shipping is charged. Other offers are limited-time or for new customers only.
Why do free photo books charge for shipping?
Printing and mailing a book costs real money. Companies cover the printing to win your order and recover part of the cost through shipping and upgrades.
Can I get a free photo book with no shipping fee?
Sometimes. Walgreens offers store pickup, and Shutterfly has issued free shipping codes. Both are conditional and change often, so check at checkout.
Is a free photo book good quality?
The free formats are usually small softcovers with a minimum page count. They suit casual keepsakes. For a gift or a full year, a paid book is the better pick.
Is My Social Book free?
No. It's a paid service with frequent discounts of 40% or more, plus shipping. You can build and preview your book before you decide to order.
